Jim Houser and Gary Baseman at Jonathan Levine

This weekend is the weekend for my favorite artists showing in major cities I can't get to because I'm dealing with this vertigo bullshit again... OK, sorry, got a little personal there. Two great shows open at Jonathan Levine this weekend. Gary Baseman is curating a group show and Jim Houser has a solo show.

Kill Pixie in Berlin at MK Gallery

Mark Whalen aka Kill Pixie has a new solo show at MK Gallery in Berlin opening this Saturday. Kill Pixie: Supreme Beings
Exhibition Dates: 24 October – 19 December 2009

In his latest body of work, Kill Pixie’s masked humanoid characters inhabit celestial pools and spas in a futuristic bathhouse where gravity loses all meaning. The humorous candy-colored geometric paintings depict scenes of excessive human consumption and obsession with objects, as the characters worship the almighty dollar. Inspired by folk art, mechanical sciences, structures, and urban culture, Kill Pixie says, “My work is an exploration of the objects and the elements that repeat to infinity, and I am using these elements to illustrate what I am trying to communicate.”

Juxtapoz 15 Year Anniversary Art Auction

Juxtapoz Art & Culture Magazine celebrates its 15th anniversary with “The Big Payback,” an online charity art auction and a special event in Los Angeles hosted by Upper Playground. The event benefits the non-profit Power House Project of Detroit.
”The Big Payback” auction features original artwork from over 100 national and internationally renowned contemporary artists including: Swoon, CR Stecyk III, Robert Williams, Todd Schorr, Estevan Oriol, Mister Cartoon, Shepard Fairey, Doze Green, Todd “Reas” James, Thomas Campbell, Tim Biskup, KR, Big Daddy Roth, WK Interact, Clayton Brothers, Andrew Schoultz, James Jean, Ron English, David Choe, Mike Giant, Paul Insect, Jeremy Fish, Alex Pardee, Saber, David Ellis, Boogie, D*Face, Cody Hudson & Herbert Baglione.
This means a lot to me and I'm so excited to see two of my favorite art driven companies and so many of my favorite artists lend themselves to such a great cause. I lived in Detroit about 12 years ago. I saw the process of deterioration that the city was under. It was sad, beautiful, and still inspired hope.
